I remember one of my early campaigns when the least adept player was playing a wizard. He wanted to polymorph into a troll. This was back when we were using the default 3.x polymorph rules, and when I asked him to provide a stat block for his new form, I was unsurprised to see nothing forthcoming. I think I just gave him a pile of extra hit points and 2 claw attacks or something to that effect, then mandated that if he ever were to use polymorph in the future, he needed to hand me a physical character sheet with the new form's stats. He never cast the spell again.
I'm sure it used to be standard DMing advice to occasionally roll the dice and ask one of the players for a random stat, then smile to yourself. I know I read that in at least 3 "GM's tips" back in the day.Wesley Street wrote:Time to start rolling dice at random.
